Cleaning up the Chicken Run

Our first winter in the new house, snow took down half of the chicken run thanks to poor design and extreme snow load. Thankfully we didn’t have any chickens at the time, so while inconvenient, no danger was posed to any animals. We decided to just wait until spring to deal with the aftermath.

When we got our own chicks and it came soon time to move them out to the coop and run, we had to make some adjustments to the amount of space the ladies would have access to as a result of the collapse. So we closed off the run, just before it collapsed and left the rest to be dealt with later.

Now, a year and a little bit later, we finally got around to tearing down the part that had collapsed and started the work of cleaning up the mess which had been left behind. Unfortunately, grass and weeds have grown up over all of the chicken wire and posts so this wasn’t a simple tear-out!

After cutting back as much of the grass as I could with the weed whacker, it was time to pull on our gloves and get in there. The rest of the disassembly took snips, pliers, pry bar, hammer, and shovel. As well as a whole lot of ripping and pulling, as well as a few kicks.

It was worth all of the effort though. Because by the time we were done, all the fencing that had fallen in, all the rotted wood, was gone. And now we can get to the work of cleaning up the weeds, planting decent feed grass and prepping the space for new animals!
