We decided over the winter that we were going to expand the chicken flock, likely doubling it in size when spring rolled around. We wanted to increase egg production and add some hens that layed colored eggs along with our current girls who all lay brown and cream eggs. At the time, it was before we lost Petunia, so we figured we would get 6 chicks and go up to 12 hens total.
After Petunia died, it was about time to start looking at breeds and placing an order with the hatchery, and we decided to just go for it and get 10 more chicks, because 15 isn’t really that different than 12, and we had a hard time narrowing down our choices.
Chicken math is real, ya’ll. Why buy 7, when you can get 10?
So we placed our order, on March 1st, with no idea that soon we would be staying home, and wondering if we would even be able to get our chicks! But sure enough, this Monday I got a shipping notification and contacted our post office to find out if pick up would be different due to social distancing. Nope. Same process, they’ll call when the chicks arrive, we go down to the annex and pick them up.

So this morning, at 6am, the annex called to let me know the chicks had arrived! So I got cleaned up and headed into town to get them, and came home without peeping box of babies! We carefully opened the box, made sure everyone survived (they did) and then set about getting them into the brooder.

Mia is very excited to have babies in the house again. Not sure if she knows they will grow up to be more ladies, like her current chickens, but she is already fascinated with them. And oh are they cute? So cute! Can’t wait to see them grow up!
