Welcome!

Welcome to my new blog! I started writing this with no real idea of who I was writing for, or why, it’s kind of developed a voice as I’ve gone along. I think part of it was about just wanting to get some thoughts on “paper” and out of my head, and part of it was a desire to share some of the entertaining stories that happen here around our new home.

Learning to drive the new lawn mower. Turns out these can really haul ass! So much fun!

We bought this home a little over a year ago, and I’m finally feeling settled. It’s felt like home from the moment we moved in, but I as we’re celebrating our second Christmas here, I finally feel like we’ve found a rhythm to our lives here.

We’ve added chickens to our lives, and they are a joy to watch each day. They give us far more eggs than I would expect for this time of year. It’s a dreary, dark time, and even still, we often get 5 eggs from the 6 of them! Come spring, we’ll clearly have more than we can handle, and I’ll definitely have to take them to work!

Our chickens are already regularly laying 5 eggs a day! Spring will likely bring us an overabundance of fresh eggs!

We have finally fenced the property, so the dogs can roam freely, although we have to add a little temporary fencing in spots to keep Mia out of trouble. But it’s so nice to know she can’t just escape. We’ve gotten our tractor, and we know how to use it, and have used it for many projects already.

While Mia can’t escape, Beatris decided to be an adventure chicken and kept flying the coop! We finally found out how she was getting out and blocked her exit, but it made for an exciting few days. Crazy chicken! Not gonna lie, she might be my favorite.

We’ve started adding improvements to the property, like adding electrical to the chicken coop and shed, and eventually we’ll replace the fencing on the garden and chicken run. Once we do that, we’ll fence some pasture for goats and build them a small barn, and then look for a few pygmy or dwarf goats to add to our family.

Our new greenhouse, waiting for spring starts!

We also plan to get one more Saint Bernard, to keep Mia company. We’re thinking a boy, probably a puppy, although if the right rescue came along, we wouldn’t say no. That will probably happen before the goats.

Mia loves her freedom on the property. I can’t wait to get her a friend to share it with!

And with all of those plans, comes a feeling of finally being settled and comfortable in our home. And wanting to share some of what we’re doing here. And maybe finally using that journalism degree I got all those years ago!  Who knows, maybe someone will even read it someday.
